Manchester City are expected to complete the signing of Ruben Dias from Benfica in the coming days, with Nicolas Otamendi heading the other way.

A marquee centre-back has again been a priority for the club this summer, having missed out on the chance to replace Vincent Kompany last year. Dias was looked at by City last year but Harry Maguire was the primary target as a homegrown player was pursued.

Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly was identified as an excellent option this time, but the club failed to reach an agreement on price with the Serie A club, with relations still frosty following the failed attempt to sign Jorginho two years ago from the Blues.

Sevilla's Jules Kounde was also looked at, but it is 23-year-old Dias that will be the next new signing in a transfer window that has also included Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres.

City have agreed a deal with Benfica, with Dias expected to be confirmed as a City player in the coming days and Otamendi expected to leave after five years at the club.

The club have just over a week to act if they want to bring in any more players in the window. Pep Guardiola has suffered from a raft of injuries at the start of the season and the same defensive problems that dogged them last season were brutally exposed on Sunday in a 5-2 home defeat to Leicester.
